| History |
The Arawak Indians were the first to populate St Lucia, but were decimated by the Caribs. In 1499 Columbus who succeeded to the British was the first European to discover St Lucia, then in 1667 the French arrived. St Lucia was alternately British and French for the following 150 years, throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries (changing possession 14 times); before it was finally ceded to the British in 1814.
